GALATIANS 2:9-10 THE RIGHT HAND OF FELLOWSHIP

GALATIANS 2:9-10 and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. 10 They desired only that we should remember the poor, the very thing which I also was eager to do.

The Right Hand Of Fellowship; NSB* was a common sign of acceptance and friendship. It indicated full recognition of Paul by representatives of the Jerusalem church.

Strong's defines fellowship here as partnership, i.e. (literally) participation, or (social) intercourse, or (pecuniary) benefaction. The Greek word used here is κοινωνία koinōnia. Strong's G2842.

Cross References: Matthew 16:18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

Moving to Verse 10.

Remember The Poor; almost certainly among the church in Judea (see Acts 11:29,30), reflects an ongoing concern of Paul's (see Romans 15:26).

Notes references: Acts 11:29-30. Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. 30 This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

Romans 15:26 For it pleased those from Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are in Jerusalem.

Cross Reference: This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

Takeaways: Paul is solidifying his fellowship with the church leaders in Jerusalem and giving the names. He also mentions his concern for the poor. This is something that should convict us personally if we lack compassion or find ourselves in a position where we aren't concerned for their souls first.
